Studio Plastplan
Plastplan, founded by Björn Steinar Blumenstein and former partner Brynjólfur Stefánsson, is a Reykjavík-based design and plastic recycling studio developing products, circular systems and new manufacturing models through local collaboration. Working across design, material research and production, the studio transforms locally discarded plastic into durable products, architectural applications and circular manufacturing systems.
Since 2019, Plastplan has collaborated with partners including Íslenska Gámafélagið, IKEA, 66°North, Krónan and Icelandair, developing products and material solutions tailored to specific waste streams and contexts. The studio also undertakes larger commissions, including the interior design and production for Höfuðstöðin, permanent public installations for the Municipality of Reykjavík, and bespoke projects for clients such as Orka Náttúrunnar and Heillaverk.
Alongside commissioned work, Plastplan develops its own product collections, including the Everyday Collection and Flora, demonstrating how recycled plastic can become desirable, durable products for everyday life. Through ongoing material research, machine development and production innovation, the studio continues to push the boundaries of recycled plastic, highlighting its durability, versatility and long-term value while challenging conventional perceptions of waste.
Plastplan's work demonstrates the potential of recycled plastic not only as a product material but also as a resource for future architecture and construction. Its projects have been exhibited in Iceland and internationally, including at DesignMarch and the Vitra Design Museum.
