Archive Islandia - WIP

Archive Islandia is an independent research platform founded by Björn Steinar Blumenstein that investigates Iceland's local material resources and their potential to support circular design, sustainable production, and regional value creation. Through research, mapping, experimentation, and documentation, the project is developing the country's first publicly accessible material library and digital database of local materials, secondary resources, and material-based design projects.

Since 2023, Archive Islandia has identified and documented hundreds of material opportunities across natural, biological, geological, industrial, and recycled material streams. The project combines scientific classification with design research to make information on material properties, availability, processing methods, and applications accessible to designers, researchers, industry, and the public. Ongoing knowledge exchange with the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate, the Environment Agency of Iceland, the Natural Science Institute of Iceland, and IceTec has informed the development of the database and its material taxonomy.

By connecting design, science, education, and industry, Archive Islandia seeks to transform the perception of Iceland's material landscape - from one of scarcity to one of opportunity. The project aims to become a national resource for material knowledge, supporting research, innovation, sustainable manufacturing, and the transition towards a more circular economy.
